Through a social media post, the company AKAER confirmed the delivery of three hatches intended to be part of the first of the new Tamandaré frigates for the Brazilian Navy. The announcement is part of various projects in which the firm is associated with the Brazilian Armed Forces, including the PROSUB and the modernization of the EE-09 Cascavel for the Army, to name a few examples.
In their post earlier this week, AKAER stated, “Two flight deck hatches, robust and prepared for helicopter impacts, were delivered, while the third is intended for Waste Handling. This is a significant step in the evolution of the project, highlighting Akaer’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in the defense industry,” mentioning the components destined for the first Tamandaré frigate.
As of today, the Thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul shipyard is progressing in the construction of the first two Tamandaré-class frigates for the Brazilian Navy at its facilities in Itajaí. It is worth noting that the naval construction program includes the manufacturing of four units intended to replace the Niteroi-class frigates, which have served for four decades.
The construction of the first frigate, named “Tamandaré (F-200),” took place in March 2023 with the keel-laying ceremony. Meanwhile, the second unit, designated “Jeronimo de Albuquerque (F-201),” started its fabrication last November as part of the ceremony for the cutting of the first naval steel plate. Following the plan outlined by the Brazilian Navy, the units are expected to be delivered during the period 2025-2029. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the contract with Thyssenkrupp includes the option for the acquisition of two additional units.
