Continuing with the armored units renewal process, the Brazilian Army is progressing with the decommissioning of the 6×6 wheeled armored vehicles EE-11 Urutu. According to the planned schedule, starting from March 1st of the current year, 96 units will be decommissioned, estimated to be replaced by the VCBR 6×6 Iveco Guarani.
Through Order No. 1,232-EME/C Ex dated January 31, 2024, the Brazilian Army orders the decommissioning of twenty (20) units corresponding to the M5 version and seventy-six (76) units of the M6 version. Until the replacement of the EE-11 is completed, at least 41 armored vehicles belonging to the M6 version (VBTP for personnel transport and other specialized versions) will remain in service.
This adds to the provisions made by Ordinance No. 851, dated September 1, 2022, through which the retirement of a first batch of EE-11 Urutu armored vehicles was ordered, totaling 129 units.
As part of the retirement process, the Army Staff of the Brazilian Army (EME) ordered on October 31, 2023, the sale or donation of twenty (20) EE-11 M5, while thirteen (13) M6 will be donated to public security agencies, such as the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN) and the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ).
On the other hand, two (2) M6 will be used as instructional units at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy and at the Logistics Sergeants School (EsSLog), four (4) M6 will remain at the 15th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment for instruction in internal security operations, two (2) M6 will remain at the São Paulo War Arsenal (AGSP) for studies in research and development projects, while nine (9) M6 corresponding to ambulance, workshop, and GLO (special operations) versions will remain in operation, and five (5) M6 will be used as spare parts donors.
