According to sources consulted by Zona Militar, the Argentine Navy will carry out maintenance work on the destroyer ARA “Sarandí” (D-13). The unit assigned to the Destroyer Division would enter one of the dry docks of the Naval Arsenal Puerto Belgrano, located at the homonymous Naval Base, in the coming days.
With the planned work, it is expected to carry out the corresponding tune-up in order to keep the unit in service, considering that it is planned to have the ship operational again upon the arrival of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) of the United States Navy to the waters of the Argentine Sea. It is worth noting that, according to the latest records and publications, of the four MEKO 360 destroyers in the Navy Fleet, the “Sarandí” was the only operational unit, participating in the recent “Fraterno” operations, alongside the Brazilian Navy, and “Miaplacidus III”.
As part of the efforts made by the Navy to increase the number of ships in service, during December 2023, the Destroyer ARA “La Argentina” (D-11) entered the dry dock at the ANPB for hull maintenance and painting, along with the inspection of the ship’s bottom valves.
The MEKO 360 destroyers are currently the only units of the Argentine Navy capable of firing anti-aircraft missiles (Aspide System) and anti-surface missiles (Exocet MM-40 system), despite their age and the lack of a comprehensive modernization of their systems during their operational career, which are technologically outdated.
