According to a post made on their social media by the Naval Projects Management Company (EMGEPRON), the first Tamandaré-class frigate of the Brazilian Navy will be launched during the next month of August, following the completion of hull assembly and welding works, positioning of the propeller shaft, and propulsion system.

The announcement was made during the visit on Monday, February 26, by the Director-General of Marine Material, Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa, accompanied by the Director-President of EMGEPRON, Vice Admiral Edesio Teixeira, and other representatives of the company, who toured the Thyssenkrupp Brasil Sul Shipyard (tkEBS) in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina.

The delegation also visited the Society of Friends of the Navy (SOAMAR) of Itajaí, as well as the Administrative Support and Supervision Offices of EMGEPRON, where relevant information about the progress of the Tamandaré-class Frigate Program (PFCT) and the activities carried out by the shipyard was presented.

It is worth noting that the Tamandaré-class frigate construction program consists of developing four (4) units, intended to replace the Niteroi-class frigates (based on the British Type 21 design) which have served for four decades. The first to be delivered, “Tamandaré” (F-200), gives its name to the class, while the second unit, named “Jerónimo de Albuquerque,” was started in November 2023.

According to the specifications provided by the shipyard, the four Tamandaré-class frigates will have dimensions of 107.2 meters in length, 15.95 meters in maximum beam, and a displacement of 3,500 tons. “…State-of-the-art sensors, as well as exceptional stability and adaptability, with a ‘two islands’ survival center, a modular design for multiple uses…” will provide great combat capability and resistance at sea. The Tamandré can accommodate up to 136 crew members, as well as having facilities to operate an ASW/ASuW helicopter and a VTOL drone.
