Given the advancements in the modernization of the TAM VC to the TAM 2C A2 standard, personnel from the Argentine Army, along with the Israeli company Elbit Systems, have initiated the Instructor Course with the aim of training them on the new systems being integrated into the tank.
Following the completion of the Technical Operational Evaluation in the middle of last year, the project gained new momentum after renegotiating financing with Elbit. The first prototype of the TAM 2C A2 (Argentine Medium Tank Second Centenary) was presented at the Arsenales Battalion 602 “Coronel Ángel Monasterio” in Boulogne, Buenos Aires.
It’s worth noting that the modernization of the TAM represents a technological leap of 40 years for the force’s main armored combat vehicle, balancing the scale within the regional context, while also promoting the involvement of local companies such as IMPSA in the production of the modernized tanks.
In addition to updating the sensors and equipment in the turret, the TAM 2C A2 program involves the inspection and fine-tuning of the selected units’ hulls to extend the combat vehicles’ lifespan.
The project encompasses work on a total of 74 TAM VC to the 2C A2 standard. This is the new designation incorporating the latest sensors and equipment developed at the cutting edge by the Israeli company. The new version is distinguished, for example, by its new Elbit laser warning system (E-LAWS) composed of four receivers, providing 360º azimuth coverage in 3 dimensions.
Furthermore, the new fire control and aiming system stand out, incorporating the stabilized panoramic sight COAPS-L for the gunner and tank commander. This standardization of optronic systems could translate into a reduction in logistical burden, as well as certain aspects related to crew training.
Elbit Systems will provide support for the conversion work up to unit No. 6, according to statements made by the former Chief of the General Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Pereda, in late 2023. Another notable aspect is the turret machining work carried out by the company IMPSA from Mendoza, which will initially work on 10 units.
