In anticipation of the upcoming visit of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) of the United States Navy at the end of this month, President of Argentina Javier Milei will travel to the aircraft carrier to oversee the Passex exercise with the Argentine Navy.
The presence of the USS George Washington is part of the international exercise Southern Seas 2024 conducted by the US Fourth Fleet. During its stay in the waters of the South Atlantic and Pacific, the aircraft carrier will participate in exercises and combined activities with military and naval forces from South America, including the navies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay, as well as port visits to Brazil, Chile, and Peru.
It is worth noting that the unit departed on April 25th from Naval Station Norfolk after completing various scheduled maintenance processes. These include a scheduled upgrade program carried out at Newport News Shipbuilding facilities in May 2023, along with the refueling of its nuclear reactors.
According to sources consulted by Zona Militar, the Passex exercise supervised by President Milei between the US and Argentine Navies will take place on May 29th and 30th near the Naval Base Puerto Belgrano, where the US aircraft carrier will conduct the exercise with units of the Argentine Navy. During its voyage, the aircraft carrier will be escorted and supported by other ships, specifically the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) and a Henry J. Kaiser-class fleet replenishment oiler, the USNS John Lenthall (T-AO-189). Although the Argentine Navy did not specify which units would participate, it is expected that units from the Fleet Command and the Naval Aviation Command will be involved.
