Yesterday, May 27th, the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that he has signed the necessary papers for French instructors to be sent to Ukrainian training centers. The proposal put forth by France aims to train local troops, and furthermore, the military high command believes it will encourage other countries to do the same.
This project was initially proposed in February of this year, during a conference to support Ukraine, and now, in a video conference between the French Minister of Defense, Sébastien Lecornu, and the Commander of the Ukrainian forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, it has been confirmed that personnel will arrive in the country, although a confirmed date has not been set.
It’s worth noting that the proposal also arises within the framework of a series of discussions within NATO, where some members have suggested the possibility of sending military instructors to Ukrainian ground. Kiev has requested that these authorities train around 15,000 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Despite France’s proposal, several countries such as the United States and others from Europe have distanced themselves from the French president’s statements.
Since the beginning of the war between Ukraine and Russia, France has been one of the European countries that did not hesitate to provide support through the delivery of military equipment, such as Multiple Rocket Launcher Systems (MRLS), SCAPL EG cruise missiles, CAESAR self-propelled howitzers, Crotale NG anti-aircraft defense batteries, and AMX-10RCR reconnaissance vehicles, to name just a few examples.
