Continuing its itinerary for the Southern Seas 2024 deployment, the USS George Washington aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy crossed the Strait of Magellan to soon engage in combined exercises with the Chilean Navy. Recently, the Nimitz-class vessel, along with its escort group, completed combined naval exercises with the navies of Argentina and Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean.

As announced by the Chilean Navy yesterday, June 5th, the USS George Washington, accompanied by the USS Porter destroyer and the John Lenthal logistic ship, entered the waters of the Strait of Magellan to transit through and reach the Pacific Ocean.

Moreover, the presence of the U.S. Navy’s flagship vessel in these waters served as a rendezvous point with the initial Chilean Navy assets deployed to receive it. These included the Almirante Blanco Encalada frigate (FFG-15), which had previously conducted navigation in southern waters alongside the oceanic patrol vessel “Marinero Fuentealba.”

According to the Chilean Navy, “The units of the U.S. Navy will navigate through the Strait of Magellan escorted by the ‘Blanco’ Frigate en route to Punta Arenas, where they will remain for a few hours before continuing their navigation towards the Pacific Ocean.”
