Following initial lessons from the ongoing war, the Israeli ministry of defence is putting pressure on the Issraeli air force (IAF) to agree to operate a dedicated ground – ground missile unit with a range of up to 500 km.
Some years ago, the Israeli defence forces (IDF) have decided against forming a specialized ground-ground missile unit , an idea that was brought up by then defence minister Avigdor Lieberman.
The renewed effort to form the unit under the command of the IAF is based on the fact that it has the most updated “target bank” in every fighting arena and the technology to close the sensor to shooter gap almost in real time.
Currently the artillery corps of the IDF is using one ground- ground missile based on Elbit systems Accular 122 .
If the unit is formed , it will be equipped with different types of ground – ground missiles like the Elbit systems Accular with a 35 km range , the Extra with a 150 km range and the Predator Hawk with a range of 300 k.
The Israeli aerospace industries (IAI) Lora with a range of 400 km will also be included in the planned unit’s arsenal.
Sources told Zona Militar that the unite when it I formed will also operate other ground – ground missiles that are currently classified.
