The Russian Navy has concluded its large-scale exercises, which involved over 300 ships from all its fleets and the Caspian Flotilla. This deployment of the three hundred surface units, submarines, and support vessels was complemented by the presence of 50 aircraft of various types and over 20,000 personnel.
According to the defense ministry, “…The units and formations of the Russian Navy that participated in the planned exercises in the operational areas of the Northern, Pacific, and Baltic Fleets, as well as in the area of responsibility of the Caspian Flotilla, have begun to withdraw their forces. In the near future, the crews of the ships that carried out training and combat missions will return to their permanent bases…”
The large-scale naval exercises included practical use of weaponry, with anti-aircraft missile launches and artillery fire against maritime and aerial training targets. “…During the exercises, fleet and Caspian Flotilla commanders cooperated with other military, security, and federal government agencies. Drills included base defense preparation, suppression of illegal maritime activities, and sea rescue, among other integrated activities…”
The massive deployment of the Russian Navy, which can be seen as a demonstration of strength and operational capability, coincides with activities by other forces. For instance, Tu-95MS bombers were recently deployed in airspace near the U.S. and Japan.
According to TASS, the main objective of the recent exercises was to verify the Navy’s command chain, as well as the readiness of ship crews, naval aviation units, and coastal troops to carry out their assigned missions.
As the withdrawal of over 300 ships begins, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, stated that “…Based on the available results of the missions assigned to the fleets and flotilla forces, I believe that the exercise’s goal has been achieved. The Navy General Staff will conduct a detailed analysis of the actions of surface forces, naval aviation, and coastal units that were part of the comprehensive combat training…”
