The U.S. Army recently awarded BAE Systems a $493 million contract to produce M109A7 artillery combat vehicles and M992A3 ammunition carriers. This contract stipulates that production and delivery of the artillery vehicles will occur between August 2025 and July 2026.
Regarding the recent contract, Dan Furber, Director of Ground Vehicle Production for BAE Systems’ Combat Mission Systems business, stated, “We are focused on producing and fielding modern artillery capabilities that provide the Army with overmatch in range, accuracy, and lethality. This contract ensures the ABCT will sustain operations of one of the most survivable indirect fire support systems for years to come.”
The M109A7 artillery combat vehicle is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer designed to enhance sustainability compared to the M109A6 Paladin fleet. The new variant includes various upgrades, such as a modified turret with a high-voltage electrical system and a chassis (along with suspension and transmission) based on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The M109A7 has a crew of four soldiers and can engage targets from 20 to 40 kilometers depending on the type of ammunition used. The U.S. Army planned to acquire over 700 M109A7s.
The M992A3 ammunition carrier supports the M109A7s. These vehicles feature a similar chassis to the latest M109A7 variant, ensuring a unified logistics line. The M992A3s are designed to transport 5,500 kilograms or 98 rounds of 155mm artillery in various configurations.
BAE Systems highlights that, “…Specifically built with common elements across the Armored Brigade Combat Teams, the M109A7 offers a low-risk option for future upgrades while alleviating logistical burdens and reducing maintenance costs. The common features of the M109A7 also benefit allied nations already operating U.S. military systems by preserving interoperability through support, maneuver, and transport features…”
The M109A7 entered full production in 2020, with several agreements already underway for the production of the artillery combat vehicle. The recent award brings the total value of the contract to nearly $3 billion. To meet the growing demand for artillery systems and associated material, BAE Systems has recently expanded production and support efforts for the M109A7 and M992A3 to Anniston, Alabama, “…in addition to ongoing efforts within the company’s robust industrial network in York, Pennsylvania; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Sterling Heights, Michigan; Endicott, New York; Elgin, Oklahoma; and Aiken, South Carolina…,” the company detailed.
