In an effort to strengthen military cooperation, Uruguay has confirmed a donation from the People’s Republic of China of equipment and materials valued at 30 million Yuan (approximately US$ 4,100,000). The announcement, made on August 9, was framed by the signing of new protocols between the two countries, further solidifying their 36-year bilateral relationship.
This new equipment provision stems from military assistance agreements reached in 2019 between Uruguay and China, with the first milestone achieved through a donation of equipment in 2020. At that time, China donated protective gear, night vision devices, ballistic vests and helmets, as well as communication equipment.
Uruguay’s Minister of Defense, Armando Castaingdebat, highlighted the significance of this new donation, stating: “We will continue to deepen not only this type of donation but also training exchanges, with a particular focus on aspects we consider very important, such as peacekeeping missions.”
Chinese Ambassador Huang Yazhong emphasized, “China and Uruguay maintain excellent relations. Over the past 36 years since the establishment of bilateral relations, the friendly relations and cooperation between both countries have developed very successfully.” He added, “Military cooperation and exchange form an important part, as China has become Uruguay’s largest trading partner in the past 12 years.”
The donated equipment for the Uruguayan Armed Forces includes:
- 15 field kitchens
- 15 towed 30 kW generators
- 4 WYH5160GYS water tanks with a capacity of 10,000 liters
- 1 fuel tanker truck with a capacity of 20,000 liters
- 102 PRC-5187 handheld digital radios with broadband
- 34 PRC-5188 integrated digital radios with broadband
