As they head towards the city of Ushuaia, in the province of Tierra del Fuego, ships from the Argentine Navy and the Brazilian Navy continue conducting a series of activities as part of the Combined Exercise Fraterno XXXVII. A few days ago, the Submarine Phase of the exercise concluded with the arrival of several units at the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base, which set sail again last weekend to begin the Maritime Phase of the naval exercises.
Joining the Argentine Navy units that participated in the Submarine Phase, including the MEKO 360 destroyer ARA Sarandí and the ocean patrol vessel ARA Storni, along with the Brazilian frigate Liberal (F43), were the destroyer ARA La Argentina and the MEKO 140 corvettes ARA Espora and ARA Rosales for the Maritime Phase. As previously reported, with the conclusion of the first phase of the Combined Exercise Fraterno, the Brazilian Navy’s submarine Tikuna completed its participation and returned to its home base.
During this second phase of Fraterno XXXVII, the Brazilian frigate and the Argentine units will carry out various activities, with additional support from the Argentine Navy’s Fleet. The planned operations include air defense, anti-submarine training exercises, and live-fire drills. These latter exercises include BENGALEX drills and the use of a Killer Tomato, where aerial and surface targets are simulated with flares and inflatable targets, respectively.
Additionally, it should be noted that once the ships arrive in Ushuaia, both the ARA Sarandí destroyer and the Liberal frigate will soon prepare to head to Chile for their next participation in the Multinational Exercise UNITAS.
