The Peruvian Navy (MGP), the branch of the Peruvian Armed Forces making the most progress in implementing its development plans, shared its main projects for institutional strengthening and projection towards the year 2025.

It was the Commander General of the naval organization, Admiral Luis Polar Figari, who, in the presence of the Minister of Defense, Walter Astudillo Chávez, made a detailed presentation regarding the main investment projects aimed at improving its capabilities.

He pointed out that among the eight priority areas are the strengthening of the naval industry in partnership with SIMA Peru, the modernization and expansion of the Callao Naval Base, and the modernization of the Callao Naval Air Base. He also highlighted the push to modernize the Type 209/1200 Submarine Force, which involves four units, two of which are already in this process, with the first undergoing its final sea trials.

Another key point is the delivery of a multipurpose vessel, referring to the BAP Paita (Pisco class, based on the Makassar), which is already in the internal equipment installation phase and preparing to begin its sea trials. Similarly, there is the recovery of capabilities for the Lupo-class helicopter-carrying missile frigates, which have been in service for over four decades and are necessary as a transition towards the renewal of the Surface Force.

Additionally, there is the conversion of a second Fokker 50MPA maritime patrol aircraft to the SIGINT or signals intelligence version, likely with FadeA from Argentina, as was done with the first aircraft already received.

Finally, the start of river operations for the two Social Action Platforms (PIAS), Ucayali I and Ucayali II, delivered earlier this year by SIMA Peru at its Iquitos headquarters, which will join state actions to bring priority services to more than 120,000 people in the Amazon.

This information is shared in the context of the central government’s presentation to the Congress of the Republic of the Public Budget Bill for Fiscal Year 2025, which has allocated 8,402 million soles for the Defense sector, equivalent to 2.217 billion dollars at the current exchange rate.
