The Y-20 transport aircraft of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) of China recently conducted its first international aerial demonstration at the Egypt International Airshow. For various media outlets and analysts, this not only reflects the growing importance of the China-Egypt relationship but also China’s intention to strengthen its military ties with this African country and others.
During the event, the Y-20 performed its first overseas flight on Tuesday, executing six maneuvers, including steep climbs and dives, high-angle turns, and rapid landings, showcasing the aircraft’s extraordinary maneuverability, according to the PLAAF. Notably, this aircraft is part of the Bayi Aerobatic Team.
Additionally, both the Y-20 and the J-10 fighters sent by the Chinese Air Force flew over the Pyramids of Giza as a gesture to commemorate the friendship between the two countries and to attract potential clients.
Y-20 Features
The Xian Y-20, known as “Kunpeng” and nicknamed “Chubby Girl,” is a large military transport aircraft developed by Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force of China. Its development began in 2006, and it became operational in 2017. This is China’s first domestically manufactured heavy strategic airlifter and the largest aircraft built in the country.
The Y-20 has a cargo capacity of 60-66 tons, with a length of 47 meters, a height of 18 meters, and a wingspan of 50 meters. It is equipped with two Russian D-30KP-2 turbofan engines and can perform missions under adverse weather conditions, including takeoffs and landings on unpaved runways. Its range varies between 4,500 and 10,000 kilometers depending on the load. In addition to its military transport role, it can also be used for humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping missions. Although primarily developed for China, the aircraft represents a significant investment in military transport capabilities and could potentially be exported to other countries in the future.
