With the framework of Operation “Weapons Launch IV/2024,” from September 11 to 15, the Brazilian Navy (MB) conducted various live-fire tests, with the main objective being the launch of a National Anti-Ship Surface Missile (MANSUP), which is currently in an advanced testing phase.
Designed to equip future Tamandaré-class frigates, the MANSUP is a surface-to-surface missile developed entirely in Brazil. With this latest launch, the testing of different prototypes continues, ensuring that the missile meets the necessary operational and precision requirements upon its entry into service.
The launch operation began with the towing of a naval target from the Naval Base of Rio de Janeiro (BNRJ) to the testing area. The next day, the Type 22 frigate “Rademaker” along with the Niterói-class frigate “Independência” set sail from BNRJ, with the “Independência” serving as the flagship of the operations. Once arrived in the testing area, the frigate “Rademaker” launched the MANSUP at the designated target, concluding with valuable experience in evaluating the future system.
The Commander of the Operational Task Group, also Commander of the 2nd Division of the Squadron, Rear Admiral Jorge José de Moraes Rulff, emphasized the importance of the mission. “This operation allows us to enhance the training level of our Air Force and Navy. The launch of the MANSUP is an important step in the development of a very significant project for the MB.”
Additionally, Operation “Weapons Launch IV/2024” included a wide variety of anti-surface and anti-air exercises, highlighting the launch of an Aspide 2000 missile from the frigate “Independência,” which also fired its 4.5-inch and 40mm cannons.
Regarding Naval Aviation, an SH-16 “SeaHawk” helicopter fired PENGUIN air-to-ground missiles, while an AH-11B “Super Lynx” dropped MK-9 bombs. In terms of fixed-wing aircraft, AF-1 “Skyhawk” fighters dropped BGB-82 bombs and fired their 20mm cannons. For support, the MB deployed the Multipurpose Vessel “Bahía,” the Corvette “Caboclo,” the submarine “Tikuna,” the coastal support ship “Almirante Hess,” along with a section of tactical divers.
