In recent hours, the Danish Minister of Defense, whose country financed the purchase and delivery, confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have received the 18 new 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers as part of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) forum. “This was the first agreement we achieved. In July, we placed the order (with Ukrainian manufacturers) for the production of 18 ‘Bogdana’ artillery systems, and this weekend they were already delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the official stated.
The acquisition was confirmed in July of this year as part of a new military assistance package and an initiative from Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, who announced a new approach regarding the transfer of equipment to Ukraine during the European spring. In this context, he expressed that they would prioritize the purchase of new equipment to strengthen the Ukrainian military industry and expedite the supply processes for the troops.
Earlier this year, the Danish defense minister had signed a letter of intent reflecting this, formalizing an agreement in June of this year. This batch of 18 2S22 Bohdana howitzers is the first product of this cooperation and change of approach.
It is important to note that the investment required to acquire these eighteen new artillery systems totals 1.2 billion Danish crowns (approximately 175 million dollars) from the Ukrainian Defense Industry Procurement Fund.
The Bohdana is a wheeled self-propelled artillery system of Ukrainian origin, equipped with a 155 mm cannon compatible with NATO standards, based on the chassis of a 6×6 KrAZ-6322 truck. Its crew consists of five people, it can reach speeds of 80 km/h, and it has a maximum firing range of 60 km.
Production began in 2015 at the Kramatorsk heavy machinery plant. In 2023, the system was officially adopted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and later in April of this year, the production of Bohdana systems increased to 8 units per month. Finally, in July, Denmark financed and ordered the production of 18 units of the self-propelled artillery system.
