Earlier this year, various sources reported on the advanced negotiations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan to finalize the sale of JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, intended to equip the Azerbaijani Air Force. A few days ago, in an official presentation attended by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, the country officially unveiled the first of its new combat aircraft, manufactured by China and Pakistan through a joint venture between Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation.

Although many details of the deal remain secret, it is estimated that the agreement to supply the Azerbaijani Air Force with new JF-17 Block III multirole fighters would be worth around $1.6 billion, without specifying the exact number of aircraft to be included. Various sources indicate that the package, which includes weaponry, spare parts, and logistical support, would consist of eight units, with an option to purchase an additional batch of eight more. However, the Azerbaijani Air Force’s request and requirement is reportedly for a total of 24 aircraft. With this acquisition, Azerbaijan would replace its old and obsolete MiG-29s, becoming the fourth operator of this weapons system, after Pakistan, Myanmar, and Nigeria.

The ceremony took place at Heydar Aliyev Airport, where Azerbaijan’s president was introduced to the first JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter, followed by an aerial demonstration by a jet in service with the Pakistan Air Force. During the event, personnel from the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex explained the capabilities and features of the new multirole fighter to the president, which was displayed along with its potential armament. Various local media suggest that the Azerbaijani Air Force may seek to equip its JF-17s with missiles and guided weaponry from Turkey, such as the Bozdoğan and Gökdoğan missiles.

Finally, it is important to note that, despite its victory over Armenia in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, where the use of drones and artillery support played a decisive role in Azerbaijan’s favor, the country continues to strengthen its Armed Forces by incorporating new capabilities. Recent acquisitions include Turkey’s Akinci UCAV drones and Italy’s C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft. Additionally, Azerbaijan is modernizing its Su-25 attack aircraft fleet in collaboration with Turkish companies.
