As part of the current modernization programs of the French Armed Forces, the Directorate General of Armament (DGA) confirmed the delivery of two newly modernized Leclerc XLR tanks to the French Army. With the incorporation of the 14th and 15th tanks, they are part of a total of 21 vehicles expected to be delivered throughout the year.
Last year, the French Army and the Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed they would proceed with the renewal of a significant portion of the Leclerc tank fleet, upgrading them to the version designated as “XLR.” The initial contract for the first batch of 50 units was awarded to the company Nexter at the end of 2022, with plans to modernize up to 200 tanks by the end of 2029.
These tanks incorporate improvements such as the collaborative warfare system “Scorpion,” along with a new combat information system (CIC). The XLR variant also includes the installation of the Contact and Vetronics radio, which are also featured in the vehicles of the Scorpion Program, specifically in the Jaguar and Griffon.
In May of 2023, the tank underwent various tests, which were successful, not only confirming the overall performance of the tank but also verifying its technical features that place it at the forefront of military technology. One of the objectives was to evaluate the firing capability of the 120mm cannon that equips the new Leclerc version.
The ultimate goal of the program is to renew 160 Leclerc tanks by 2030, and an additional 40 by 2035, under the 2024-2030 Military Programming Law (MPL). Nexter Systems is responsible for the renewal of the first 100 tanks, ensuring that the Leclerc remains in service until the arrival of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).
About the Leclerc XLR:
The new version of the French Leclerc XLR tank features an advanced propulsion system that gives it superior mobility across various terrains. Thanks to its powerful engine and enhanced suspension, the tank can overcome obstacles and operate efficiently in challenging environments. This characteristic is crucial to ensure that the Leclerc XLR can be quickly deployed in different scenarios and maintain a tactical advantage on the ground.
The state-of-the-art communication and electronic technology incorporated into the Leclerc XLR has been tested and proven effective during trials. The advanced communication systems enable precise coordination between tanks on the battlefield, facilitating tactical decision-making. Additionally, the integration of sophisticated electronic systems provides a complete and real-time operational view, allowing for quicker and more efficient responses to challenges.
Another technical feature of the Leclerc XLR is its protection system. The combat vehicle is equipped with both active and passive protection systems that ensure crew safety in combat situations. These systems include advanced electronic defenses, composite armor, threat detection and tracking systems. This combination of defensive measures provides solid protection against projectiles and other hazards, increasing the tank’s survivability on the battlefield.
In terms of firepower, the Leclerc XLR stands out with its high-powered cannon and the latest generation targeting systems. These technical features allow the tank to neutralize long-range targets with exceptional precision. Additionally, it is equipped with automatic loading systems that ensure a high rate of fire and a rapid response during intense combat situations.
Another key aspect of the Leclerc XLR’s technology is its advanced information and control system. This system integrates sensor data, navigation systems, and weapon systems, providing the crew with an intuitive and comprehensive interface for efficient tank operation. Furthermore, the tank is equipped with diagnostic and maintenance systems, facilitating upkeep and reducing vehicle downtime.
