As part of Zona Militar‘s ongoing coverage of the AUSA 2024 Fair, Hanwha Defense USA and its parent company, Hanwha Aerospace, are showcasing a range of advanced defense products aimed at meeting the needs of the U.S. and Canadian armies. Among the main products on display are the K9A2 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, the 155mm modular charge system for artillery, and the GRUNT unmanned transport vehicle, along with other solutions designed to enhance interoperability and industrial agility in the defense sector.
The K9A2 self-propelled howitzer is the latest version of the K9 artillery system, with over 2,000 units in production or in service across ten countries, including Poland, Norway, Finland, and Australia. This new variant, being presented for the first time at AUSA, features an automatic turret system and an improved rate of fire that can reach 10 rounds per minute. This 155mm, 52-caliber self-propelled howitzer offers an effective range of 40 kilometers with conventional ammunition and has demonstrated capabilities of over 50 kilometers with enhanced rounds. It is important to note that the A1 version has a rate of fire between 6 to 8 rounds per minute.
Hanwha is also presenting its 155mm Modular Charge System (MCS), designed for 39 and 52-caliber artillery systems. This modular system is compatible with the Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) agreements. According to the company, its key features include a clean-burning charge that minimizes residue buildup in the barrel, eliminating the need for cleaning between shots. Additionally, the high-strength combustible casings withstand the stress of rapid firing, contributing to an increased rate of fire.
The GRUNT (GRound UNcrewed Transport) is another innovation Hanwha is showcasing at AUSA 2024. This 6×6 hybrid-electric vehicle is designed to support infantry operations, such as ammunition transport, medical evacuation, and reconnaissance. With a range of up to 290 kilometers and a load capacity of over 900 kilograms, the GRUNT offers significant improvements in combat support and maneuverability over challenging terrain.
Hanwha is also developing a wheeled artillery system version, incorporating the K9A2 turret technology mounted on an 8×8 truck platform. This mobile howitzer is in the prototype phase and uses a 52-caliber armament similar to the K9A1/2, with a fully automated firing sequence. Additionally, it will be paired with an ammunition resupply vehicle that uses the same ammunition transfer technology as the K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle (ARV), offering customers both tracked and wheeled platform options with equivalent performance.
