At the AUSA 2024 exhibition, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems seized the opportunity to unveil its innovative short-range laser defense system, a technological breakthrough that, according to the company, promises to revolutionize how air and missile threats are addressed in conflict zones. This new system has been developed as part of Israel‘s ongoing efforts to enhance its defensive capabilities, and its presentation at one of the world’s most important defense expos underscores the system’s relevance to the future of modern warfare.
The system, named Lite Beam, is designed to intercept rockets, mortars, and drones, among other short-range aerial threats. Unlike missile-based solutions, which are costly for each interception, Rafael’s short-range laser system offers a more economical and sustainable long-term alternative. With the ability to neutralize threats within seconds using directed energy, Lite Beam complements Israel’s existing defense platforms, such as the Iron Dome.
At AUSA 2024, Rafael emphasizes the Lite Beam‘s capability to easily integrate with already operational defense systems in the armed forces of various countries. One of its key advantages is its versatility, as it can be mounted on mobile platforms, allowing it to be rapidly deployed in changing scenarios. During the exhibition, the Lite Beam is showcased integrated with the Trophy platform.
Additionally, the laser system operates under a wide range of weather conditions, making it a reliable solution in both desert and coastal environments. According to Rafael’s developers, the system has passed rigorous testing in various climatic scenarios, demonstrating its robustness and effectiveness in real-world operational situations.
At AUSA 2024, Rafael also highlights the Lite Beam’s potential to be part of broader, multi-layered air defense solutions. When combined with other systems and missile-based interceptors, the laser system adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring that armed forces can efficiently and economically respond to diverse threats from the air.
