Yesterday, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China surprised the world with a striking formation of naval and aerial assets that made headlines. In this context, not only was the J-15B officially presented, but some internet users managed to identify the new J-15D electronic warfare aircraft on the Shandong aircraft carrier (CV-17).
In the images of the mentioned formation that have circulated, at least two J-15D fighters can be seen parked on the main deck of the carrier, which many analysts interpret as a sign that it is now in service.
The first reports of the J-15D fighter surfaced in April of this year, although its development began several years earlier, with its first test occurring in 2016. Since then, this version of the J-15 embarked electronic warfare aircraft aims to fill a highly specialized segment that the Chinese Navy currently lacks.
It is worth noting that, currently, the only aircraft of this type in service is the Shenyang J-16, operated by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force. Therefore, it is believed that various components and experiences gained from this model have been applied in the development of the J-15D.
However, the original design of this new aircraft was intended to be compatible with the current STOBAR launch systems used on the existing Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers (short take-off with a ski-jump ramp and assisted recovery). In contrast, the new Fujian employs a CATOBAR system, using new EMALS-type electromagnetic catapults, similar to those installed on the U.S. Navy’s Gerald R. Ford-class carriers.
Finally, the presence of these aircraft on China’s first two aircraft carriers is considered by some as an opportunity to gain experience for pilots, mechanics, and the Navy overall.
