For the first time since its incorporation into the U.S. Air Force (USAF), KC-46A Pegasus refueling aircraft have been deployed in a large-scale operation in the Middle East. These aircraft arrived in the region in early October from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. In 2022, the KC-46A had previously been stationed at Al Udeid Air Base (Qatar) as part of exercises aimed at certifying the KC-46A’s capabilities.
It’s worth noting that the platform received authorization from the Air Mobility Command in September 2022 to be deployed anywhere in the world and even participate in combat operations. Since then, the USAF has activated its KC-46As on multiple occasions, conducting training activities in Europe, South America, and the Indo-Pacific. Having successfully passed these tests, and in light of growing tensions in the Middle East, the Air Force now anticipates a regular rotation of these aircraft in the region.
Regarding this, the commander of the new expeditionary squadron, Major Andrew Doenitz, stated, “While the KC-46A has previously operated in CENTCOM, this deployment is laying the foundation for sustained expeditionary operations for the KC-46A (…) It has been a team effort across the enterprise to prepare for the standup of the KC-46A Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron, and I’m proud of our Airmen for playing a role in this historic achievement.”
In line with this, the 305th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron was established with only 72 hours’ prior notice, drawing personnel from the 305th Air Mobility Wing and the 87th Wing from the previously mentioned Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. According to U.S. specialized media, units from Pease Air National Guard Base were initially intended to handle this task, but “emerging requirements” made it necessary to deploy them to other areas instead.
Finally, with the new deployment of KC-46A Pegasus refueling aircraft, the U.S. Air Force has reportedly deactivated the KC-10 squadrons previously stationed there. Additionally, the KC-135s are expected to follow a similar path as the KC-10s, although it has been announced that a few will still remain operational in the region.
