As part of strengthening bilateral relations between Argentina and Israel, it is expected that the Argentine Minister of Defense, Luis Petri, will soon make an official visit to deepen cooperation in the defense sector. The arrival of the Defense Minister to Israel had been postponed due to the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon. However, with the visit now confirmed, it is anticipated to include intensive work sessions focusing on proposals from Israeli companies to re-equip the Argentine Armed Forces, particularly the Argentine Army. As previously reported, Israeli firms have been involved in various military acquisition programs, such as the 8×8 AFV Project and the acquisition of new rifles, among other examples.
Pandur II: Israel’s Proposal for the Argentine Army’s 8×8 IFV Program
It is no secret that multiple proposals for the Argentine Army’s 8×8 IFV Program have been under evaluation without a definitive decision. One of the proposals that has gained traction in recent months involves the Pandur II Armored Wheeled Combat Vehicle from the Czech company Tatra Defense Vehicle.
A key aspect of this proposal is the integration of components and sensors supplied by Israeli companies like Elbit Systems, which also supports the Army in significant modernization programs, such as the TAM 2C-A2 upgrade. Essential components, such as UT-30 turrets equipped on the Pandur, are part of the proposal to outfit the Army with a new vehicle model and a comprehensive family of vehicles aligned with the force’s requirements.
Seeking a Replacement for the FAL
In the realm of ground forces, as reported by Zona Militar, discussions between the Ministry of Defense and Israeli companies also focus on individual equipment and armaments. Proposals are being evaluated to replace the Light Automatic Rifle (FAL), which, despite modernization attempts, has served in the Argentine Armed Forces for decades.
The Israeli proposal, through Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), includes the ARAD 7 rifle, currently under evaluation by the Argentine Armed Forces alongside other proposals. Although no significant updates have been provided, sources consulted by Zona Militar have noted positive momentum and considerable progress in negotiations. Petri’s visit to Israel presents an ideal opportunity to announce significant developments in the Army’s individual armament renewal.
New UAVs: Loitering Munitions, MALE Drones, and Unmanned Helicopters
Argentina’s need for new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems is also well known. The Ministry of Defense, based on Armed Forces requirements, is looking to acquire new batches of loitering munitions from the Uvision HERO family.
Additionally, the acquisition or leasing of MALE (Medium Altitude, Long Endurance) UAVs and unmanned helicopters for the Argentine Navy to operate from its ships is being pursued. Over recent months, as reported by Zona Militar, Israeli companies such as IAI and Steadicopter have sought to make a strong impression on military and ministerial authorities to provide the Armed Forces with capabilities it currently lacks.
