NEWPORT, Wales - EADS has proposed the Airbus A330 as part of a range of stopgap options to meet customers' airlift needs as the A400M transport plane program has been delayed, CEO Louis Gallois said Jan. 13. The offer of the A330, a twin-engine airliner, is one of several "bridging solutions" EADS has proposed to the seven European launch customers of the A400M aircraft. Other types of aircraft also could be provided by the company until the new turboprop plane is delivered, Gallois said. Related Topics * Europe * Air Warfare Britain will use the A330 under the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft lease program, and France also could use the Airbus aircraft, he said. The customers want a firm binding delivery schedule, Gallois said. Such a timetable would be available only once a date for the first flight of the A400M is finalized, he said. EADS has said delivery would take place three years after first flight. No date has been fixed for the maiden flight, however, as the engine makers have yet to deliver the full-authority digital electronic control system for the first flight, he said. EADS has taken provisions of 1.75 billion euros ($2.3 billion) on the A400M so far. EADS is trying to renegotiate the 20 billion euro development and production contract for the A400M, because the company, customer nations and suppliers underestimated the complexity and risk of the program, Gallois said. The new four-engine plane was contracted as a civil aircraft program that will require civil certification. But it also will be an advanced military aircraft, complete with military capability, a turboprop engine delivering turbojet speed of Mach 0.7, data links and protective countermeasures. "This plane is more complex than Rafale or Eurofighter," Gallois said. EADS has reorganized the management structure at the customers' request, bringing the Military Transport Aircraft Division under the control of Airbus, Gallois said. EADS also will work with suppliers to get tighter program links, he said. No one has developed a new military plane in 10 years, but the A400M was contracted to be delivered in 6.5 years, he said. The A400M will be delivered, but not in 6.5 years, and when delivered, it will still outperform other products worldwide, he said. "We are downgrading the plane," Gallois said. The negotiations with customer nations will allow EADS to deliver phased versions of the A400M, similar to the Eurofighter and Rafale combat jets, which entered service with baseline capabilities and were upgraded over time. The decision to suspend A400M production is intended to avoid a retrofit program after the first flight of the aircraft, according to EADS. Bueno...parece que el A-400 va demorar bastante :yonofui:
