A Vought VE-7 pictured just after launching from a wooden deck erected on board the battleship Oklahoma (BB 37) on August 13, 1920, ninety-three years ago today. This image taken on August 8, 1919, ninety-four years ago today, shows a Hanriot HD-1 used by the U.S. Navy to evaluate shipboard operations by wheeled aircraft following World War I. These airplanes launched from wooden decks temporarily built on the turrets of battleships. Note the flotation bags beneath the lower wings that could be inflated by the pilot in the event of a water landing. The hydrovane forward of the landing gear prevented the airplane from nosing over in the event of a forced landing at sea.
