D’Estienne d’Orves-class corvettes are designed primarily to conduct surveillance anti-submarine missions in coastal areas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). They also can perform maritime patrol duties and escort duties.</p><p>The ships accommodate a crew of 89. They have a max range of 4,536 nautical miles, a top speed of 23.9 knots, and a full displacement of 1,330 tons. The ships are equipped with Exocet anti-ship missiles, a 100 mm naval gun, torpedoes, rocket launches, and machine guns. The first ships began operations in 1975 and France is now in the process of retiring the entire fleet, opening up opportunities for sales on the international market.</p><p></p><p>Argentina already operates three Type A69 ships, which are known locally as Drummond-class ships. The first two ships were bought in 1978, while the third was commissioned in 1981. The three Argentinian ships have been upgraded to include new C4I consoles.</p><p></p><p>The acquisition of the French corvettes could raise questions about future Argentinian purchases. The country has investigating building its own offshore patrol vessels.
