The current production version of the ASTROS II ARS (covered in detail in a separate entry) is based on a Brazilian developed 6 × 6 cross-country chassis that uses Mercedes-Benz automotive components. The new generation ASTROS III ARS is based on a new 8 × 8 chassis that also uses Mercedes-Benz automotive components, but has increased cross-country mobility and a higher payload. As of early 2007 AVIBRAS was concentrating its export marketing efforts on the current ASTROS II artillery rocket system, rather than the more capable ASTROS III model. </p><p></p><p>Description </p><p>As with the earlier systems, the ASTROS III ARS has a fully enclosed and armoured cab at the front, with the power-operated launcher at the rear. The common launcher can take a number of rocket pods that contain a varying number of surface-to-surface rockets. These include the SS-30 (84 rockets with maximum range of 30 km), SS-40 (40 rockets with a maximum range of 35 km), SS-60 (12-rockets with a maximum range of 60 km), SS-80 (12 rockets with a maximum range of 90 km), SS-150 (four rockets), FOG-MPM and the TM (Tactical Missile - four rockets). The FOG-MPM uses fibre optic guidance and is still under development as is the TM. The latter has greater range and accuracy than current rockets as it has wings that fold out in flight and a guidance system. Development of the SS-150 is said to be complete, but quantity production has yet to commence. It is understood that this has been developed specifically for the export market by AVIBRAS. The current production ASTROS II can carry a total of 32 SS-30 rockets, while the new ASTROS III can carry 84 rockets. This means that each launcher has a significant increase in firepower. ASTROS III has a combat weight of about 35 tonnes and is powered by a 476 kW diesel engine. To provide a more stable firing platform, four hydraulic stabilisers are lowered to the ground by remote control.
