This aircraft, Bureau Number 0324, was eventually transferred to VT-8 and was shot down during the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Killed in action were the pilot, Ensign Ulvert M. Moore, and gunner, Aviation Radioman Third Class William F. Sawhill. In March 1944, the Navy commissioned a destroyer escort named in honor of Moore. Interestingly, her first skipper was Lieutenant Commander Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., son of the President of the United States.</p><p><img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1001463_10152913563320174_957300456_n.jpg" alt="" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-draggable " style="" /></p><p></p><p></p><p>Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 513, the "Flying Nightmares," will disestablish this year. Here is an image highlighting the legacy of the squadron during its seven decades of service. It shows members of Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron (VMF(AW)) 513 at K-8 airfield in Kunsan, South Korea, circa 1952.</p><p><img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/295524_10152913513930174_147500394_n.jpg" alt="" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-draggable " style="" /></p><p></p><p></p><p>TBF Avengers, F4F Wildcats and an SNJ Texan tied down on the flight deck of the training aircraft carrier Sable (IX 81) operating on Lake Michigan on June 10, 1943, seventy years ago today.
