I am an ex RAAF Mirage IIIO driver. I read your comment about the Cyrano II not being able to look down. I agree it couldnt look down into clutter very well...SH in the weeds so to speak However if the SH is above say 15000feet then it had a reasonable look down capabilty. Mirage at say 20,0000 feet SH at say 15,000feet no problems. I can remember getting contacts head on out around 18nm ... V SH which was pretty good for a Cyrano II :) On another point. About a year after the Malvinas conflict the RN sent a Sea Harrier squadron out to Australia. We fought against them in our Mirage IIIO with R550. The RN were extremely over confident. In the ACT that took place we were in a dedicated Air Defence config 2 x R550 and 2 x 500Litre Supersonic tanks. Most of us were very experienced Mirage III drivers. The fights took place us within 60nm of our base and the SH the same from the carrier. The results were pretty embarrassing for the RN. The Mirage V SH with Mirage in a dedicated AA config and not having to worry about a 400+nm flight home was easily a match for the SH. Sure we lost a few engagements but over all we dominated.
