So 35 yrs on and today was the day it got real for me. At around 1600 hrs on this day HMS Alacrity,Arrow and Glamorgan were travelling approx 3miles off the coast of the islands approaching what was know as the gun line to bombard the runway. I was on Alacrity and was a look out on the right hand side of the bridge when we spotted 2 mirage jets on the horizon they turned and headed straight at us travelling at approx 100ft above the water as they approached the officer told everyone to brace themselves, I remember the MAA diving for cover but the rest of us held on still watching these jets approaching. It was like a dream in slow motion if you like. The jets pulled up at the last minute firing there guns etc, and as they passed over dropping 2 parachute bombs which fell between our super structure and exploded on our stern. Luckily causing no damage to us although the Arrow was hit by some gun fire. As the jets came round again one was hit and it looked to us that the Argy's had shot down there own jet. (imo) When air-cover arrived it was amazing to see what only can explained as a dog fight with the other mirage, this was shot and we watched it explode luckily the pilot ejected. This was the first time since WW2 that English ships had been attacked in anger. All three ships returned to the fleet safely.
