However, the PLA was reluctant to fund the programme because it was in favour of purchasing or locally producing the Leopard 2.</strong> Negotiations with West Germany lasted for few years before the acquisition plan was finally cancelled due to financial difficulties. The programme went back to the indigenous development, with three experimental prototypes (1224, 1226, 1226F2) introduced in the early 1980s.</p><p></p><p>The programme made little progress in the first few years due to the dispute between two schools of thoughts in the design team and the PLA who funded the development. While some suggested to reverse-engineer the Soviet T-72 to save development time and costs, others insisted on more radical designs with Western-style 120mm smoothbore tankgun, gas turbine engine, and unconventional front-mounted engine layout (similar to the Israeli Merkava). A compromise was reached in 1984 with the final design being conventional layout, Western-style welded turret, and Soviet-style 125mm smoothbore tankgun.</p></blockquote><p></p>
