Company President Wolffgang Backhaus told UVOnline that pre-production prototypes are already in service with Argentinean special forces, experience that Backhaus says has brought the system sufficient maturity to begin production, which will have to happen soon if the company is to meet deadlines for opportunities in Spain and the United States.</p><p></p><p>Spain bought about 9 Raven systems under an urgent operational requirement for deployment with its forces to Afghanistan but, according to Backhaus, picked Nostromo as a foreign partner for a longer term need. “In Europe, we are currently discussing a cooperation agreement with a major Spanish company to develop a joint product based on our current platform." </p><p></p><p>A very tight deadline applies to the stateside opportunity: ‘In four months we have to provide the first systems to begin a demonstration programme in the US.’ The aircraft will be shown to the US Border Patrol, US Customs and several police departments. </p><p></p><p>The Carbure is a conventional looking high-wing monoplane powered by an electric motor driving a pusher prop mounted above the wing centreline. A spindly tail boom ends in a T-tail. With a maximum take-off weight of 3.5 kg, a wing span of 1.7 m and a length of 1.2 m, the Carbure is launched by hand and recovered using a deep stall manoeuvre. It will cruise at 90 kph and loiter at 60, offering an endurance of up to 1.2 hours and a maximum LOS range from its ground station of 10 km.</p><p></p><p>It is currently available with an autopilot from Spain’s UAV Navigation, but alternatives are in the works from France’s Polyvionics and Germany’s Mavionics. The latter is particularly intriguing as it offers a mode called ‘spline navigation’ in which the operator can specify a precise track along the ground for the UAV to follow regardless (within reason) of wind. Wolfgang Backhaus says that this autopilot also offers independence from GPS as a navigation source.</p><p></p><p>The company started up nine years ago, has been in the UAV business for three and yet the Carbure is its second system.
