The former Clemenceau en route towards France On Wednesday, 22 February 2006, in front of the National Assembly Defence commission, Michèle Alliot-Marie declared that the convoy was sailing towards France. The Minister of Defence told the deputies that the contract with company SDI (Ship Decomissioning Industry), entrusted with the transfer of the ship towards India, had been broken "by common agreement " and that France had passed a chartering agreement directly with the tug. The return journey via the Cape of Good Hope should last three months, at the average speed of 5 knots (that is 9 kph). The former Clemenceau will sail a little more than 10,000 miles (that is 18,000 km) before arriving to Brest. Feb 12: A row breaks out over the amount of asbestos that Technopure removed from the vessel before its departure from the Mediterranean port of Toulon. The French defence ministry orders a probe after finding it cannot locate 30 tonnes of toxic material which Technopure claimed it had removed.
