It may contain inaccuracies, but these are unintentional. None of the information given herein may be attributed to the MoD, the Commanding Officer of HMS Avenger, or any official spokesperson.</p><p></p><p>The intention has not been to write a history of war, but to record the observations and impressions of a few men who were on the spot in key positions in one warship, HMS AVENGER, and who saw the conflict through a single pane in a very large window.</p><p></p><p>We write this so that we may not forget the events as we saw them, nor the brave men who gave their lives in battle. We therefore dedicate these few pages to all those who died in our sister ships HMS ARDENT and HMS ANTELOPE, and to all the other men of the sea, of the British Royal and Merchant Navies who fell in this inhospitable place.</p><p></p><p>signed by the writer</p><p>Michael Hollis</p><p></p><p>May/June 1982</p><p>The South Atlantic</p><p></p><p>29/30 May</p><p>This day, a Type 42 Destroyer engages a Lear Jet and a C130 transport of the Argentine Air Force with her Seadart SAM, one of which passes neatly between the two targets, damaging neither.</p><p>We try to insert 25 Special Forces troops to the north of Volunteer Bay but our Lynx becomes defective and the sea is too rough to use our boats. We shell targets on Dutchman’s Island and in the Volunteer Bay area (29 HE). This night, the people of Puerto Argentino put on the town lights to help the ships which are lying off shore and shelling local targets. On the afternoon of 30th at 1733 GMT, whilst proceeding from the Main Task Force towards East Malvinas in an attempt to land Special Forces troops, and whilst one of our 20mm guns is unmounted and being transferred from our flagdeck to our flightdeck, we come under air attack. A Wessex is hovering over our flightdeck, HMS EXETER is 10 miles astern and HMS AMBUSCADE lies on our starboard beam. Two Exocet ASM are detected coming straight for us. We seduce one with chaff and it passes close down our port side. The other we shoot down using our 4.5" gun. </p><p>A-4 aircraft follow up the Exocet attack. The Wessex quickly leaves, flying straight through a cloud of our chaff. HMS AMBUSCADE launches her Lynx.</p><p>Two A4 aircraft pass down our port side, dropping their bombs close to our port quarter. The third is seen to drop its bomb and cartwheel into the sea. It is thought that either this A-4 got caught in its own bomb blast, or it had flown through the explosion zone of the Exocet. Later we recover, by seaboat, some aircraft parts and pieces of uniform. The Wessex recovers the aircraft’s life raft. The remains of the pilot are seen amid wreckage floating in the water. Later thisnight we successfully insert Special Forces troops near Volunteer Bay using AMBUSCADE's Lynx. We support this operation with gun fire (125 HE).</p></blockquote><p></p>
