Laing, flying an F-4 Phantom II of Fighter Squadron (VF) 114 off the carrier Kitty Hawk (CVA 63), engaged North Vietnamese MiG-17 fighters over the enemy air base at Kep. They shot down one enemy jet, but their plane suffered battle damage that forced them to eject over the Tonkin Gulf.
