The first Phantoms were USAF operated</p><p>27 USAF F-4Bs loaned by the US Navy. In 1960 the US Navy formed the first</p><p>Phantom unit, a Replacement Air Group (RAG) which</p><p>was tasked with training of future F-4 pilots and</p><p>backseat RIOs. VF-101, first at Key West and later</p><p>Oceana, became the first RAG while VF-121 based at</p><p>Miramar became the second.</p><p></p><p>The 48th Phantom onwards was designated F-4H-1F (First)</p><p>later renamed F-4A while the F4H-1 becoming the F-4B. The</p><p>649 built F-4Bs were flown in 27 US Navy and Marine Corps</p><p>squadrons.including as electronic warfare version EF-4B.</p><p>A dozen F-4Bs were modified to F-4G. The F-4J was the</p><p>follow-on version of the F-4B of which a total of 522</p><p>F-4Js were operated by 24 US Navy (Reserve) squadrons.</p><p>F-4Js were heavily used in Vietnam were 71 US Navy</p><p>F-4s were lost in combat. A few F-4Js were modified to</p><p>EF-4J.</p><p></p><p>In total 228 US Navy F-4Bs were refurbished to F-4N which</p><p>was flown by 13 USN squadrons. At the end many F-4Ns were</p><p>converted to QF-4N drones. The F-4J was modernised to F-4S</p><p>standard of which 248 F-4Js were rebuilt. Of the USMC</p><p>RF-4B, the photographic reconnaissance version of the</p><p>F-4B, 46 RF-4Bs have been delivered. 522 F-4Js were</p><p>built for the USN and USMC. During the Vietnam War the</p><p>USMC was early and heavily involved resulting in 95</p><p>USMC F-4s lost in combat. The F-4N was operated by</p><p>eight US Marine Corps squadrons. Of the USMC RF-4B, the photographic reconnaissance version of the F-4B, 46 RF-4Bs have been delivered. 522 F-4Js were built for the USN and USMC. During the Vietnam War the USMC was early and heavily involved resulting in 95 USMC F-4s lost in combat. The F-4N was operated by eight US Marine Corps squadrons. Many surviving USMC F-4Js were upgraded to F-4S status and served in 13 squadrons.
