I started life as a trainee naval architect in 1977. I predicted that the ships being built then would not survive a war because they had no armour, were made of flammable aluminium and had hardly any missiles in order to save money. <strong>Unfortunately I was proved right in the Malvinas war</strong> and that was at the hands of the miniscule Argentine miltary. </em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>"Money has also been saved in side armour protection" - Well done, maybe Gordo will donate it to India or Pakistan. <strong>Oh and don't worry about Exocets!</strong> </em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>"The CVF's first line of defence is the frigates and the new Type 45 destroyers around us. Our only self-defence is close-in weapons systems and small guns." - Insane, close-in Phalanx guns run out of ammunition very quickly. You see in the UK we don't have a massive defence budget and looking at the issues the French have had with the CDG and its nuke powerplant going conventional seems a wise decision. </em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>As for being white elephants. Well you arm yourself not for today but for the war tomorrow. We can't always rely on the US to provide carriers, and <strong>what happens if the Argentines decide to try for the Malvinas again? It could happen</strong>. Well the US don't have multiple missile systems. The CVNs rely on the AEGIS with the SM-2 and then there is phalanx CIWS which I personally question how effective they would be against a Mach 3 Russian ASM if it got through the ASTER missiles so CIWS is a last chance saloon.
