The intention was to take advantage of the German preoccupation with the British and Canadian activity around the town of Caen further to the east, and create a corridor that would allow the First Army to push through into Brittany.</p><p></p><p>Having been delayed several times due to poor weather, the Operation commenced on the 25th of July with a heavy allied aerial bombardment, which reduced the city of Saint-Lô to ruins.</p><p></p><p>By the 27th of July, much of the German resistance had collapsed, and the Operation concluded a week after it began on the 31st of July.</p><p></p><p>(Nb.
