Una de cal y otra de arena........ $10 billion contract for five warships June 20, 2007 12:56am FEDERAL Cabinet has approved a $10 billion contract to build five warships - including three air-warfare destroyers - of Spanish design. Prime Minister John Howard and Defence Minister Brendan Nelson are expected to make the announcement today. Australia's biggest-ever naval ship-building contract will also include two 27,000 tonne amphibious ships at a cost of at least $2 billion. The Spanish design will be built by the government-owned Navantia and Victorian-based Tenix Marine with delivery of the first ship to the Royal Australian Navy by 2012 and the second by 2014. The two ships are expected to be built partly in Spain and partly in Australia, creating up to 500 jobs at Tenix's Williamstown dockyard in Melbourne. The remaining $8 billion will go towards building three air-warfare destroyers (AWDs), also of Spanish design, due for delivery in 2014, 2016 and 2017 Fairfax newspapers reported. The 6000 tonne vessels will be built by Adelaide-based ASC in partnership with US systems integrator, Raytheon, and Australia's Defence Materiel (Materiel) Organisation. The amphibious ship design was chosen over a smaller French version and the F100 destroyers were favoured over a competing and larger, more heavily armed US design. "The F100 meets our strategic needs," a senior defence source told News Limited newspapers. "It has the capability that meets the requirements that Australia has for the AWDs." Defence sources also said Mr Howard and his senior ministers preferred Navantia on price, design and delivery schedule.
