India Will Manufacture Engines for MiG-29 Licensed production of RD-33 jet engines for MiG-29 airplanes of various modifications will be started in India, Kommersant reports. Production of 120 RD-33 engines, which are intended for replacement of the Indian air force MiG-29 power plants, will be realized at a HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd) ((in English)) corporation plant in Karaput. At first, only the assembly of engines from kits ((KOMPLEKT)), their test and overhaul will be carried out at the Indian plant. In the future India will begin manufacture of the whole cycle, and also will be able to manufacture improved engines of the RD-33 family with vectored thrust. Moreover, RD-33MK engines will be produced in India for the ship-based MiG-29K fighter, which will delivered to India along with the “Admiral Gorshkov” aircraft-carrying cruiser. Transfer of the license for manufacture of the engines increases Russia’s chances significantly for victory in the tender for the delivery of lightweight fighters for India’s air force. The tender provides for the purchase of 126 fighters at a cost of 6.5 – 9 billion dollars. The new airplanes are supposed to replace the MiG-21 fighters in the Indian air force. Russia is offering the MiG-29M2 (MiG-35) fighter for the Indian tender which has been demonstrated since 2005 at the largest air salons of the world.
