De la página de MBDA: MBDA has been given the go-ahead by the French MoD and Navy to develop an extended range version of the Exocet MM40 anti-ship missile. This commitment to the successful Exocet family of anti-ship missiles will see the French Navy profiting from MBDA’s proposal to add turbojet propulsion to the MM40 giving the missile an added coastal attack capability. Confirming the launch of the new missile today at Euronaval, Mrs Michèle Alliot-Marie, the French Minister of Defence said, “ I have agreed to the financing of the Exocet upgrade which will promote not only the evolution but also the future of this heritage of excellence.” The latest ship-borne Exocet missile system will now go into full-scale development to meet the changing needs of navies worldwide as the focus of naval operations moves from former Cold War open-ocean warfare to the littoral arena. Significant performance enhancements and technology upgrades over the Exocet MM40 Block 2 system include a new propulsion system which more than doubles the missile’s effective operational range out to 180km, an optimised airframe plus enhanced navigation. The design improvements enable navies to fully exploit littoral operations, including an additional coastal attack mission capability, as well as carry out conventional blue water anti-ship operations. “The launch of the Exocet MM40 Block 3 is an excellent example of how MBDA as prime contractor can develop an existing missile system to meet changing needs and provide customers with a highly cost-effective means of upgrading their weapon system capability”, Pierre Dubois, Managing Director of MBDA France said. Compatible with existing Exocet MM40 launchers and logistic support infrastructure assets, the new Exocet MM40 Block 3 missile can be easily integrated onto in-service surface ships and meets evolving naval requirements for vertical launch. “The Exocet MM40 Block 3 has been designed to minimise the impact on the logistic and support costs to current MM40 users seeking to upgrade their missile stocks. The new missile is fully interoperable with the Exocet MM40 Block 2 standard to enable a smooth transition,” Dubois added.
