Press Review Friday 8 April 2011 | Radio Netherlands Worldwide Defence cuts: is the Netherlands a toothless tiger? The government’s sweeping defence cuts dominate today’s Dutch dailies. “The government is demolishing our army,” grumbles De Telegraaf, reporting that the cuts include over 12,000 job losses and leave the Netherlands with no Cougar helicopters and no tanks. “An army without tanks is a toothless tiger,” exclaims one military man, who slams the cuts as “disastrous”. The paper wonders: “Will the Netherlands still be able to defend itself in future?” AD leads with the news that Defence Minister Hans Hillen is already apologising to military personnel and their families for the effects of the cuts. “The sky will turn black,” he declares ominously and the armed forces will be overwhelmed by a “numbing feeling of misery”. All of which begs the question why did he approve the cuts in the first place? He tells AD simply: “It could have been a lot worse.”
