At 1120 a shell exploded in the forward boiler room and started a serious fire which necessitated this compartment being abandoned. Steam power was lost and ship immobilised. Ship was abandoned with a heavy list to port. Ten minutes later a large explosion, probably a torpedo, occurred amidships on the starboard side, EXETER quickly rolled over to starboard and sank at 1150.</blockquote>
