As hostilities loomed, the SAS brought a number of Stingers over from the American Delta Force base at Fort Bragg. The troopers had no time to train on the Stingers but were still able to down several Argentine aircraft, including deadly Pucara attack aircraft. The Stinger was first used on May 21st, 1982, but the troops who were equipped with the missile had received little or no instruction in its use;  one SAS solder had received training, and was due to train other troops, but he was killed in a helicopter crash on May 19th before he could do so.
