First Israeli Hercules completes Bedek upgrade

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has delivered the first Lockheed Martin C-130H to the Israeli air force, after performing an extensive refurbishment including replacing the transport's centre wingbox and wiring.

Two years ago, the Israeli air force selected IAI to replace the centre wingbox section on a number of C-130Hs, as part of a life extension programme for the variant.

IAI's Bedek Aviation Group completed work on the first aircraft and returned it to the service. It began working on the second example shortly after. In addition to replacing the centre wing section, scheduled maintenance was performed to cut down the overall grounding time. The aircraft's wiring documentation was also updated to meet international standards.

Air force test pilots carried out several test flights to assess a wide variety of aircraft flight modes and expressed satisfaction with the workmanship quality and overall performance of the aircraft.

Bedek general manager Eli Hattem attributes the successful project to the company's long experience in performing such work.

The Israeli air force is reorganising its Hercules squadrons, as part of its preparations to deploy the new-generation C-130J. This process will result in the consolidation of its two existing C-130 squadrons, with its current "Elephants" unit to be absorbed into the "Knights of the yellow bird". The former will be re-equipped with the C-130J "Samson".

Aircraft retained with the "Knights of the yellow bird" unit will be those that have been upgraded in recent years, including the H-models that are now being upgraded by Bedek. Israel has 18 C-130E/Hs, with the older E-version aircraft to be phased out.

In June, Lockheed delivered the first Israeli C-130J in the USA, with the aircraft planned to arrive in the customer nation in early 2014. The air force is currently on contract to receive three of the type, while it has also made a formal request to acquire another three. The aircraft has a three-crew cockpit configuration, and will be modified for the future installation of some Israeli systems.

Estos son los cockpit ofrecidos por Rockwell Collins para el PDM de cualquier Hércules.

Opción 1:

Designed for tactical airlift missions, the C-130 is the primary aircraft for transporting troops and equipment for the U.S. Air Force and armed services around the world. Rockwell Collins’ avionics and display systems have been selected to provide Communication, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) cockpit upgrades for a number of C-130 aircraft customers.

Rockwell Collins provides total avionics systems solutions for several international C-130 upgrade programs. As part of our integrated offering, we supply the flight management systems, displays, autopilot, weather radar, Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and the complete suite of radio communications/navigation equipment. Installation of these components into the C-130 provides a highly integrated flight deck system with a glass cockpit for improved situational awareness, reduced crew workload and enhanced safety features, as well as all CNS/ATM capabilities. Rockwell Collins’ development of the 6” x 8” Multi-Function Display (MFD) family, specifically designed for the C-130 also brings expanded utility and capability to the cockpit. Rockwell Collins solutions have been selected for C-130 upgrade programs in Canada, Denmark, Greece, Jordan, Pakistan, Egypt, Thailand, Singapore and a North Africa country. More C-130s are flying with Rockwell Collins avionics than any other single avionics provider.

Opción 2:

Rockwell Collins is supplying displays, communication and navigation equipment to The Boeing Company for the U.S. Air Force C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). Together, these products will further augment and enhance the aircraft’s operational capabilities, allowing it to meet requirements for the CNS/ATM environment.

Our C-130 AMP Head Up Display (HUD) system is a compact and high performance full color and text display used in both commercial and military aerospace applications. In addition to the HUD, Rockwell Collins is supplying our 6” x 8” MFDs, increasing pilot situational awareness and enhancing crew effectiveness. Communication and navigation products for the C-130 AMP include AN/ARC-210 radios, SAT-2000 satellite communications systems, multi-mode receivers, automatic direction finders and high frequency data link upgrades.

In this role Rockwell Collins provides Boeing, the U.S. Air Force and the warfighter advanced technologies for improved operational effectiveness and mission success
