Increasing the capabilities of the amphibious armored personnel carriers is consistent with the Peruvian Navy's (MGP's) amphibious warfare expansion programme, which aims to add two new marine battalions and over 1,800 additional personnel by 2016.
Manufactured by the Spanish company Escribano, the Guardian remote weapon station is composed of different sub-systems: in addition to the Browning M2 12.7 mm machine gun, the Guardian is fitted with a dual axis gyro, an IR sight, a LRF, a Daysight camera, DC brushless motors, a sleep ring (360°), and a feed fordward gyro.
The upgraded variant of Peru's BMR-600 APC seems to be part of a bigger project, dubbed "SACAF III - Sistema Terrestre", which is co-directed by the Peruvian Servicios Industriales de la Marina (SIMA) and the Spain-based company Mecanizados Escribano.
Principal objective of this project is to increase the offensive and dissuasive capabilities during specific jointly or combined defense operations in maritime, coastal, riverine or terrestrial environment at tactical and strategical levels, thanks to an automatic weapon system incorporating the M2 12.7 mm machine gun.
The Peruvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has ordered 32 LAV-II 8x8 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from General Dynamics Land Systems in Canada (GDLS-C) under a USD67 million contract. The LAV-IIs will replace the 16 Pegaso BMR-600 6x6 APCs in service with the Peruvian Marine Infantry Command since 1987.
