Air Platforms Israel's first M-346 trainer aircraft comes together Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 07 November 2013 The first of 30 M-346 aircraft for Israel being assembled at Alenia Aermacchi's production plant in Venegono, Italy. Source: Alenia Aermacchi Alenia Aermacchi has begun final assembly of the first of 30 M-346 Master advanced jet trainer aircraft for the Israeli Air Force (IAF), the company announced on 7 November. The first aircraft is currently being put together at Alenia's production facility in Venegono, Italy, ahead of delivery in 2014. The M-346s' twin Honeywell/ITEC F124 engines will be provided under a separate agreement between the Israeli and US governments using Foreign Military Sales funding. Israel procured the M-346, to be named 'Lavi' (Lion) in IAF service, in 2012 to replace its fleet of 37 Douglas TA-4 Skyhawk ('Ahit' - Vulture) aircraft which is due to be retired. In securing the approximately USD1 billion deal, Alenia beat-off competition from Korean Aerospace Industries and its T-50 Golden Eagle aircraft. Israeli defence officials explained that, while both aircraft were technically very similar, the M-346 won out due to its lower maintenance costs and "higher-quality training flight".
