Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - Two of the 174th Fighter Wing’s eighteen F-16’s took off from the Air National Guard Base for the last
time today.
The 174th is in the midst of transitioning from flying F-16’s to MQ-9 Reapers. The Reapers are unmanned aerial vehicles.
“It is a bittersweet day for the 174th Fighter Wing. We are sad to see the first departures of the F-16 fighter jets that we have loved flying the past 19 years, but we are excited to open a new chapter of combat aviation with the coming MQ-9 Reaper mission,” Vice Wing Commander Col. Charles Dorsey said in a news release today.
Sixteen F-16s remain at the base; the two that left are now in California. Most of the remaining planes will leave over the next 18 months.
