The development of the HJ-8 ATGM began in 1970 as the second-generation ATGM for the PLA. The system received its design certificate in 1984, and entered service in the late 1980s. The HJ-8 is serving with the PLA in man-portable tripod launcher, vehicle launched, and
helicopter launched forms. In addition, the missile was exported to Pakistan (including licensed production), United Arab Emirates, Thailand, as well as some African armies. The Pakistani-made version of the HJ-8, known as Baktar Shikan, was reportedly used by the Bosnian Muslim forces against Serbia Army in the early 1990s. The combat results showed that the missile had no difficulty to penetrate the front armour of the Serbia’s M-84 main battle tank (MBT).
The HJ-8 design resembles some features of the Soviet/Russian AT-4 Spigot. The weapon system is designed primarily for anti-tank warfare in all-weather conditions, day and night. The missile can be fired by infantrymen using a tripod, as well as from vehicles and helicopter. The missile has a maximum range of 3,000~4,000m. The early variants of the HJ-8 can penetrate armours of 800mm thick, while the later variants (HJ-8C/E) fitted with tandem warheads are claimed to be capable of penetrating armours of over 1,000mm.
